Front Line Assembly is Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber. Although based in Vancouver, Canada. Bill is originally from Vienna/Austria. He served his musical apprenticeship in the mid-80's as alter ego Wilhelm Schroeder in Skinny Puppy, but left to pursue his own band of electronic dance and mood music in 1986; working alone and at various other times with both Rhys and Michael Balch.
F.L.A.'s
first vinyl appearance was on Third Mind Records double album Compilation
"For your Ears only" in the middle of 1987, though Bill had issued
limited edition cassette releases prior to this, the best known as "Total
Terror". F.L.A.'s first full length releases were three albums released
monthly between December 1987 and February 1988, all for different labels:
"The Initial Command" (KK-Belgium), "State Of Mind"
(Dossier-Germany) and "Corrosion" (Third Mind-England). Three
months later Third Mind Records issued another mini-album entitled "Disorder".
"Disorder" and "Corrosion" were repackaged with some
exclusive bonus tracks on the "Convergence" CD. At this time
the band members were Bill and Michael with Rhys as Studio assistant. "Gashed
Senses & Crossfire", released in April 1989, was the band's next
album release, spawning the mighty dance singles "Digital Tension
Dementia" and "No Limit".

The band played some concerts in Europe and a collector's edition album simply called "Live" was recorded at the last UK show of the European tour and then released and deleted on the same day as a strictly limited edition of 4,000 copies.
In 1990 Front Line Assembly became a major force on the hard core techno/EBM scene world wide, releasing the awesome singles "Iceolate/"Mental Distortion" and "Provision" and the classic "Caustic Grip" album. Michael was now no longer a band member. Rhys took his full-time place in the band. In February 1991 they saw the release of a new single "Virus".
A 12"/CDS "Mindphaser" preceded the new Album ("Tactical Neural Implant") In March 1992, the multi-layered yet hard edged disco pulse combined with unique samples of the track demonstrates that the group had lost none of their powers. The video of "Mindphaser" became the "Independent-Video Of the Year" at MTV 1992. The mini-album "The Blade" was following. This mini-album included four different "The Blade" remixes.
Early in 1994, Front Line Assembly changed to the dutch label Roadrunner Records. In September 1994 the album "Millennium" and the single "Millennium" were released simultaneously. And again, there was a change of style! It was the guitars that now characterized the music of Front Line Assembly. Crossover was still up-to-date. The CD received great reviews from the press. Several magazines awarded the album as album of the year 1994. Until then, two club hits ("Millennium" and "This Faith") were released, followed by the cut "Surface Patterns".
These were the last releases on Roadrunner - In the middle of 1995 Front Line Assembly changed again to another label. The new label is OFF BEAT (Germany). With this label, Front Line Assembly will release the new Max-CD (including a CD-ROM) and the new album in September 1995.
